In response to President Lincoln's call for additional soldiers, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment became one of the first all black military units to serve in support of the Union during America's Civil War. This regiment was formed by recruiting free African Americans primarily from Northern states. The regiment earned a reputation for
